Mercosur trade talks accelerate with UAE and India

Mercosur trade talks gain pace as Brazil leads efforts to expand ties with India and the United Arab Emirates.

This move diversifies exports amid EU deal progress. Tatiana Prazeres, Secretary of Foreign Trade at Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, noted negotiations underway in March 2026. She spoke ahead of a Brasilia event. Negotiations aim to initiate or expand trade ties with India. Fresh talks with the UAE also start now. These steps follow momentum from the impending Mercosur-EU agreement. That pact nears provisional application on May 1, 2026. It promises removal of import duties on over 90% of EU exports to Mercosur. The agreement is projected to boost Brazilian exports by 13% annually.

The strategy targets emerging markets. India and UAE offer growth, consumption, and investment. Mercosur seeks global integration. It cuts reliance on old partners. Agribusiness and manufacturing stand to gain most. Sectors like sugar, fruits, beef, and poultry benefit early from EU access. However, Brazil eyes balanced trade. Safeguards protect against import surges.

US Tariff Risks Prompt Diversification

US trade remains uncertain. Policies stay volatile. This marks improvement from last year’s spikes. Yet, dialogue with Washington continues. Officials stress steady engagement.

Mercosur trade talks fill the gap. They position India and UAE as key avenues. Brazil coordinates with partners like Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Vice President Geraldo Alckmin backs the approach. He highlights UAE and Canada as further targets.

Meanwhile, global shifts aid the pivot. EU-Mercosur progress counters unilateral actions. Ursula von der Leyen praised Brazil’s role. Consistent with signing on January 17, 2026, after prior negotiations, boosts stability.

Investor Opportunities in Exports

Investors should watch agribusiness and manufacturing. Mercosur trade talks open doors. Brazil-led exports target high-growth markets. EU momentum accelerates deals. UAE talks could tap energy and logistics. India expansion builds on the current PTA.

Returns look strong. Tariff relief lifts volumes. Capital markets gain from trade finance. BNDES and B3 instruments support flows. Risks linger from US volatility. Yet, diversification strengthens resilience. Emerging partners drive upside.
