China’s expanding investment strategy in Bahia is reinforcing Brazil’s position within global electric vehicle, critical minerals and renewable energy supply chains.
Bahia emerges as a strategic industrial hub

Chinese companies are accelerating investment plans in Bahia as Brazil gains relevance in the global energy transition economy.

The new wave of projects connects electric vehicle production, mineral processing and renewable energy development. It also strengthens Bahia’s role as one of Brazil’s most important industrial and logistics centres.

Chinese automaker BYD remains at the centre of this strategy. The company continues developing its large automotive complex in Camaçari, Bahia, following its acquisition of Ford’s former industrial facilities.

The project could transform Bahia into one of Latin America’s leading electric vehicle manufacturing hubs over the coming years.

Critical minerals gain strategic importance

At the same time, Chinese groups are increasing their focus on critical minerals in Bahia and neighbouring regions. These materials remain essential for batteries, electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.

Brazil holds large reserves of lithium, nickel, graphite and rare earth elements. As global competition for strategic minerals intensifies, international investors continue seeking long-term access to stable supply chains.

The integration between mining, industrial manufacturing and clean energy projects creates a broader economic ecosystem. Analysts believe this model may generate stronger industrial spillover effects across logistics, services and infrastructure.

The strategy also aligns with China’s broader effort to secure access to commodities and industrial capacity across emerging markets.

Renewable energy supports industrial expansion

Bahia has also become one of Brazil’s leading renewable energy producers. The state attracts major investments in solar and wind power generation due to strong natural conditions and available land.

As a result, industrial groups increasingly view the region as suitable for energy-intensive manufacturing linked to the green economy.

Institutions such as BNDES and Ministério do Desenvolvimento, Indústria, Comércio e Serviços continue supporting industrial modernisation and energy transition projects across Brazil.

Brazil gains geopolitical relevance

The expansion of Chinese investment in Bahia reflects broader geopolitical and economic trends. Brazil increasingly occupies a strategic position between industrial supply chains, commodity exports and clean energy development.

China already represents Brazil’s largest trading partner. Demand from Asia continues to influence investment flows into infrastructure, mining, agriculture and manufacturing.

For Brazil, the challenge now involves maximising industrial value creation while expanding domestic technological capabilities and employment generation.

For global investors, Bahia increasingly appears as a strategic gateway connecting renewable energy, electric mobility and critical mineral supply chains within Latin America.
