BTG Pactual agreed to buy HSBC Uruguay for $175 million in July 2024. The bank now awaits Central Bank of Uruguay approval.
Regional Expansion Gains Pace
BTG Pactual eyes mid-2026 for regulatory nod. Operations will start gradually in the second half. Dirk Mengers, head of sales and business development for Latin America ex-Brazil at BTG Pactual Asset Management, shared this at a conference organized by Pro Capital in Montevideo on April 15.
The firm founded in 1983 in Rio de Janeiro already operates in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. In 2024, BTG Pactual began acquiring US bank M.Y. Safra to serve Latin clients there.
HSBC Uruguay runs five branches and a head office in Montevideo. The deal covers retail, corporate, and institutional banking. All staff transfer to BTG Pactual.
Uruguay Draws Capital Flows
Mengers calls Uruguay the Singapore of Latin America. It attracts investment from Argentina, Chile, and Brazil. The country offers tax advantages, institutional stability, and rising financial literacy.
Global volatility helps. Middle East tensions and US economic uncertainty push capital to Latin America. Investors see the region as attractive now.
BTG Pactual rivals Goldman Sachs in the region. It covers asset management, capital markets, and corporate banking.
For investors, BTG Pactual Uruguay opens a stable gateway. It channels funds efficiently amid global shifts. Regional expansion signals confidence in Uruguay’s role. Capital from Brazil and neighbours will flow faster. This boosts options for Latin American finance.
